Aintourine Aintourine is situated on the northern-western slope of the Qozhaya Valley at an altitude of 1300 m and is 27 Km from Zgharta. As its name means the spring of the mountains, it is verdant and abundant in water. In 1849, Aintourine counted 209 males and the number of houses was 51. The official records counted 1304 registered persons in 1998 (1050 in 1988). Nearly 60% of the registered are now living abroad as emigrants. 327 of them (list of names on the right in yellow) had cut their relations with their motherland although their names are still in the records. Education: The priests took the job of teaching the children during the Ottoman era. In the early 1930ies, the government sponsored a school founded by George Is’hack Khoury from Kfarshakhna and succeeded by Hamid Beshara. The Archdiocese established a school in 1943 and lasted till 1976. There was an attempt to establish a Public school that failed to survive a year. Administration: In May 1998, the first municipal elections took place with 15 candidates running up in two lists. The elected municipal council of 9 members was finally formed of: Michel Khattar (President), Jean Shehadeh (Vice President), Youssef Samet, Simon Ishak, Doumit Elias, Antoine Saab, Toufic Wehbe, Badawi Aniseh, Beshara Maria. The elected Mukhtar: Boulos Antonios Beshara.
