Rainfall in the lower region of the Caza of Zgharta – Zawieh

Here is a comparative study of the rainfall in Zgharta-Zawieh based on the records of the last three seasons 2000-2001, 2001-2002 and 2002-2003. The readings were done in Kfardlakos, a region at the border of the town of Zgharta at an altitude of 110 meters.

1 – Number of rainy days per season:

The average number of rainy days in Lebanon is 60 days per year. There were 30 rainy days in 2000-2001 season, 52 rainy days in 2001-2002 and 62 rainy days in 2002-2003. February was the wettest month in 2000-2001 with 9 rainy days, while December was the one in 2001-2002 with 11 rainy days and in February 2003, 19 rainy days were counted.

Below is a comparative graph showing the number of rainy days by months for the last three consecutive years as they were recorded in Kfardlakos.

In the season 2000-2001 the last snows were noted on May 9 and in the 2002-2003 season snow covered twice Jabal (mount) Tourbol on December 21 and February 25.

2 – Amount of rainfall in millimeters (mm.)

The 2002-2003 season was by far the wettest season (1092 mm.), although the amount of rainfall recorded in Beirut was exceeding by nearly 200 mm. that recorded in Kfardlakos. In the table below are noted the amounts of rainfall recorded in the past 3 years month by month.

The highlighted numbers are for the months that recorded the highest amount rainfall per season. In the 21^st of November 2001, 33 mm. of rainfall were recorded in one hour.

As you notice February 2003 is by far the month that recorded the highest amount of rain in the past 3 seasons with 382 mm. of rain.
