Rash'ine (Rash'een) 3 Km east north of Zgharta, Rash'ine is the second populated community in the district. Demography: In 1555, Rash'ine counted 30males, increased to 135 males in 1849 living in 43 houses. In 1906 there were 500 males in Rash'ine and in 1998, the official records counted 3763 registered persons. Nearly 900 persons of those originary from Rachiine are now living abroad as emigrants. 191 of them had cut their relations with their motherland although their names are still in the records. We welcome any news about them.
Education: There was no regular school in Rachiine till the 1920ies till Father Ghnatios Noujaim, with the help of the Lazarists, founded a school. In addition to Fr. G. Noujaim who spent 45 years teaching there was Badawi Rashid Noujaim as an Arabic language teacher and Is’hak Antonios Derjani as a French language teacher. The public school was established in 1944 and the first teacher was Youssef A-Khoury Al-Ikrini. In the 1950ies a second school was inaugurated in Baiader Rash'ine and closed down in the 1970ies. Among its teachers were: Assaad Semaan from Imar, Antonios Oueis, Charlotte and Mouna Zaidan... In the year 2000 a high school was opened. Administration: In 1998, a new municipal council of 12 members was elected. 28 candidates were running in three oppasite lists. The council that resulted is formed of the following members: Milad Barmou (President), Gerges Habak (Vice President), Michel Ayoub, Antonios Mourani, Michel Nasmi, Mas'oud Wehbeh, Antonios Tarazi, Wadi' Derjani, Youssef Gharib, Sassine Farah, Mikhaiil Rustom (Abdicated), Sarkis Saysouk (relieved). The elected Mukhtars are Fouad Habib Njaim and Nabil Sarkis Ayoub.
