Aashashe
Aashashe is a small village situated to the north of Zgharta. It suffered much during the civil war of 1975/76. In 1555 there were 17 males in Aashashe. In 1849 it counted 96 males living in 23 houses. This number increased to 270 males in 1906. In 1988, it counted 1390 registered persons and 1585 registered in 1998. More then half of the registered are now living abroad as emigrants. Some of these had cut their relations with their motherland although their names are still in the records. A list of these early emigrants, born after 1898 and their official record numbers is on the right side in yellow.
Education: The Order of the Lebanese Maronite Monks founded the school of Mar Gerges in 1847. The school became famous and in 1952 it turned to an establishment providing all levels of education from elementary to high school. In 1975, by the beginning of the civil war, this school was devastated and burnt.
In addition to Mar Gerges, Aashashe knew a public school and three private ones. The remaining is the school of Hamidah Naffaa.
