Aarjes
Aarjes. Located in Al-Zawieh at 9 Km from Zgharta, Aarjes stands modestly at an altitude of 325 meters. The Ottoman census of 1519 counted 43 adult males and that number decreased to 31 adult males in the 1571 census. In 1849, it 106 males living in 23 houses. In 1906 Aarjes became a larger community of 200 Maronite males and in 1932, 37 houses were counted.
In 1998 Aarjes counted 889 persons officially registered, half of them living outside Lebanon. 60 early emigrant names are still on the official citizens records. ( A list of these names is on the right in yellow)
Education: No regular school has existed in Aarjes before 1922, but some priests helped in teaching Arabic and Syriac languages for the children. In that year the government paid for the education till the year 1927. In the early 1940ies, the Maronite Archdiocese opened a school that lasted till the early 1970ies when the government set a public school that closed down in 1994. Of the teachers of the public school were: Youssef Al-Toulani, Shehadeh Al-Alam from Daraya, Youssef Al-Alam from Raskifa and Mrs Adibeh from Ser’el.
Administration: In May 1998, the first municipal elections since the 1960's took place. The elected municipal council of 9 members was finally formed, by a consencus, of: Pierre Al Daher (President), Mikhaiil H. Kheir (Vice President), Boutros Ghattas, Fr. Boutros Semrani, Michel A. Moubarak, Raymond Itr, Sarkis Matta, Badawi E. Khoury, Gerges Madfar.
The elected Mukhtar: Chales Jaqwad Semrani.
The names below are for emigrants, born after 1898, that left the country in the first half of the 20th century and didn't report back In the first column are the numbers of official citizens records.
