Aalma Aalma is 4 Km north west of Zgharta. It is inhabited by Christians (70%) and Muslims (30%). The Muslims are located in Aakbet Aalma. In 1555, Aalma counted 58 males. It was then difficult to reach other information about the village because it was not included in the Zawieh till 1920. The number of those who are officially registerd in Aalma was 2668 persons in 1998. Nearly 50% of the Christian Maronite community in Aalma is abroad as emigrants. Most of the emigrants keep updated official citizens records, they report their newborn, the new marriages and the dead ones. There are emigrants that left the country and did not report back, they cut their relations with their motherland. Some of these emigrants are still registered as Lebanese citizens. In Aalma more than 100 early emigrants still have their names in the official records. (List on the right in yellow). Education: The Public school of Aalma is one the oldest in the district but we don't know the inauguration date. In the early years it consisted of two rooms, one for boys and the second for girls. Administration: The first municipality was implemented in 1965 and the municipal council was formed of the following: President: Jean Azar, Members: Fouad Mansour, Doumit Deeb, George Abou Haidar, Joseph Makhoul, Tanios Khdair, Boutros Hanna. In 1998, a new municipal council of 12 members was elected. There were 16 candidates, 12 formed a list and 4 remained as independant runners. The council was finally formed as follows: Albert Youssef Azar (President), Tannous Doumit Khodeir (Vice President), Antoine Gerges Abi Haidar, Charbel D. Abou Farah, Joseph W. Akl, Doumit M. Akleh, Mousa E. Mousa, Antonios S. Merhi, Hanna H. Abou Akl, Mohamad Al-Ali. Two Mukhtars were also elected: Antonios M. Mansour, Sassine B. Hanna.
