Miziara   -  Harf Miziara

Miziara: 10 Km east to Zgharta and around 750m above sea level. A large community of 4252 registered persons (1998) with the majority living and working in different African countries. They have close contact with their homeland. Miziara is relatively a wealthy and good organized community. Of the 4252 registered persons in 1998, there are 669 persons that went away and did not report back, their names are still present in the official records. (Those born before 1898, have been removed from the records)

Administration: The municipal council includes members of two, very close to Miziara, small communities: Harf Miziara and Hmeis, as these three close communities share the same municipality.

The first municipality was established in 1944. In the elections of 1963 the coucil was formed of the following persons: President Hanna Abed, Members: Youssef Shidiac, Iskandar Dahdah, Michel Jabbour, Salim Nasr, Hanna Raffoul, Youssef Doumit, Halim Dina, Halim Shaghoury

Education: The first school was founded in 1880 by the priest Yoakim Shidiac and closed down in 1918, the year of the death of its founder. In the year 1930 the “Sisters of the Holy Family” inaugurated a school that is still active. In 1945, the government opened a public school and a third school (the Archdiocese School) was inaugurated in 1950 but closed down in the early 1970ies. "the Miziariah" (1975) was a private school inaugurated during the civil war, in 1994 it closed and the school of the “Sisters of the Holy Family” moved into its buildings.

Harf Miziara

There were 824 registered persons in 1998 (745 in 1988). Harf Miziara is a newer community and only one official record (# 48) shows a family of emigrants that didn’t report back.

Education: The school was founded in 1893 by the priest Boutros Doumit and closed down in 1914, the year of the death of its founder. In 1934, Boulos Basha and Youssef Naoum opened a school that turned in 1940 as an Archdiocese school.
