The book is a pictorial history of the Lebanese emigrants in Mexico. We selscted highlights and pictures relevant to those emigrants whose origins are from Zgharta Zawieh.

-          The first emigrant to Mexican soil was Father Boutros Raffoul in 1878. He came along with a Spanish group that landed in the port of Vera Cruz.

-          In 1879, Santiago Sauma became the pioneer of the Lebanese community in Yucatan

  • In 1906, the US Foreign Affairs urged the Mexican government, via the US ambassador to Mexico, to submit the Lebanese emigrants landing in the port of Vera Cruz to medical control because many Lebanese emigrants entered US territories through Mexican border.

  • The massive Lebanese migration to Mexico took place between 1880 and 1930. in the following years many came to Mexico to rejoin other members of their families who were the early emigrants.

 

Alicia Franjieh Tayoun emigrated with her parents when she was 11 years old. They went first to Cuba and in 1928 established in Merida, Mexico.

-          In 1888 the following persons came to Mexico: Sleimane Mussa, Yusuf Hanna (Jose Juan), Yusuf Antonios with four comrades, Gerges Hanna (Jorge Juan), Georges Moussa, Antonio Issa, Pedro Nacif, Moussa Barakat, Elias Bduy, Jacobo Shahine ….

-          The majority of emigrants were from the ages of 12 to 22 years.

-          The main gates to enter the Mexican soil were the ports of: Vera Cruz, Progreso, Tampico.

-          The first emigrant families established in Yucatan were mainly from: Hasbaya, Jounieh, Batroumine, Bdibba, Tripoli and Zgharta.

-          In 1929, and according to The National Archives,  Mexico counted 3000 Lebanese emigrants, 2000 syrians, 560 Palestinians, 1258 Arabs, 82 Iranians and 30 Iraquis.
