René Moawad
(1925 - 1989 ) René Moawad, the lonely child of Anis Moawad and Evelyn Shalhoub, was born in Zgharta the year 1925. From the Mar Youssef school in Zgharta he went in 1934 to the "College des Freres" in Tripoli then to Beirut and finally got his secondary education in Aintoura. He graduated from the Law Academy at the University St. Joseph in 1948, along with Elias Sarkis, Michel Eddeh and Ghassan Tueini. He first joined the Law Bureau of former PM Abdallah Al-Yafi than had his own in 1951 in Tripoli. Seven years later he moved to Beirut. He married Nayla Issa El-Khoury on February 11, 1965 and had two children: Rima and Michel. In 1951 he was running for the deputy members election alongside with Hamid Frangie but did not succeed. In 1957 René Moawad was elected member of parliament for the first time and reelected consecuvely the following sessions: 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972. He presided the Parliamentary Financial Committee since the year 1960 till his election as President of the Republic. He was nominated Minister of PTT from 31 October 1961 to 20 February 1964, then minister of Public Works in 1969 and Minister of National Education in 1980. René Moawad was elected President of the Lebanese Republic on the fifth of November 1989 in a Parliamentary session held in the Kleiaat airport after the amendment of the Constitution according to the Ta'ef agreement. 17 days later he was assassinated, on the Independence Day on november 22.
