Rene Moawad Foundation
The Rene Moawad Foundation was founded in Lebanon in 1990 to further the life-long dedication of the former President of Lebanon, the late Rene Moawad, to the principles of dialogue, peace and social justice. His wife Nayla Moawad, a member of the Lebanese Parliament, heads the Foundation in Lebanon and serves as its honorary President in the United States where it was established in 1993. The bulk of the financing for the Foundation's projects are made through private donations, while the remainder through the support of other foundations and international organizations, such as the European Community, the Fondacion Promocion Social de la Cultura (Spain), the French Agency for Cultural and Technical Cooperation, teh National Endowment for Democracy, (USA), the United States Agency for International Development, (USAID), as well as through official state aid. Goals As Lebanon copes with the enormous task of rebuilding a nation devastated by sixteen years of civil strife, the Lebanese people are struggling to survive great amidst economic hardships and inadequate public services. The Rene Moawad Foundation is a non-profit, humanitarian and developmental organization devoted to the improvement of the quality of life of the Lebanese individual and to the building of a cohesive and democratic society in Lebanon. Toward this end, the Foundation promotes sustainable development, the principles of social justice, human rights and democracy and the protection of the environment. Through its humanitarian assistance programs and its socio-economic development projects, the Foundation aspires to contribute tot he process of peace-building and sustainable development in Lebanon. Through the civic education programs undertaken by its subdivision, the Center for Research and Education on Democracy, CRED, the Foundation aims to advance social justice and the democratic process in Lebanon. Objectives The Foundation promotes the social well-being and economic independence of the Lebanese people by ministering to their basic needs for health care and social services while providing them with tools for educational and economic development. It encourages their effective participation as citizens through the civic education programs provided by its subdivision, the Center for Research and Education on Democracy, CRED.
