Religious Caza - Zgharta The Online Magazine of Zgharta - Zawie |
|
The religious dominance in Zawieh has changed tremendously over the last 500 years. At the beginning of the Ottoman era, Christians and Muslims were living together in the coastal caza. However, the Christians gradually outnumbered the Muslims. At present the caza includes 54 towns and villages, which are mostly inhabited by Maronites, except for the villages of Karabache and Bousit, which are inhabited by Orthodox, and five Sunnite towns. This section covers the historic temples, churches, monastries and shrines in the Caza of Zgharta - Zawieh.
